Earth 2 #1
Earth 2 marks the introduction of the multiverse to DC’s New 52 line. Oh boy, I can’t wait for this to lead to convoluted stories with plot lines that run through multiple universes! Perhaps, keeping the alternate universes to their own comics will make things a little bit easier to comprehend. We don’t want to see another company-wide reboot, do we? Regardless of the confusion that alternate worlds have caused in the path, it’s only fair to judge the new Earth 2 on its own merits.
Despite my qualms with the complications that alternate universes bring, they are still an interesting way to depict characters in a new way or, in this case, kill them off without consequence. That’s right, the three characters you see on the cover die within this issue. Needless to say, Earth 2 is setting itself up to be an interesting book. However, I feel as if they could have put it off just a bit. I understand that they wanted to make it clear that this series is going to be very different from the others (as well as set up Power Girl and Huntress’s origins for World’s Finest), but the deaths would have had a greater impact if they had taken more time. Regardless, the premise has intrigued me, and the art’s pretty darn good, so I’d give it a thumbs up.-John “Shockhog” P.
